Tackling the Housing Crisis

Investment allows for creation of 34 affordable houses in town, writes Parm Gill

As Ontario continues to tackle the housing crisis across the province, I am proud that our government is making important investments right here in Milton.

I was honoured to be joined by my colleague, Minister Steve Clark, alongside our federal partners, to announce a combined investment of over $4.8 million to support the creation of 34 not-for-profit housing units in Milton.

Located at 70 Ontario St., this building features 83 one- and two-bedroom units — 34 of which are funded by both the governments of Ontario and Canada.

These 34 new units are part of a larger development that will help meet our growing community’s need for housing and keep in line with our government’s plan to increase the housing supply so more people in our community and across the province can find a home they can afford.

As we welcome more people into our province, our government is making sure they have the tools and resources they need to succeed.

In December 2021, we introduced historic legislation that will ban regulated professions from requiring Canadian work experience in more than 30 occupations.

This move has the potential to help thousands of qualified newcomers pursue their dreams over the coming years, all while maintaining Ontario’s world-class licensing and exam requirements.

Building on this progress, the Ontario government is also investing $4.7 million to provide free training for jobs in the auto sector.

These free programs will provide participants with skills for rewarding careers in machine operation, assembly, quality control, and logistics, while also preparing automotive technicians and those interested in the industry for work in the emerging electric vehicle field.

Ontario is the only place in North America where five major automakers build their vehicles, including Honda, Toyota, Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, and we are making sure our province remains competitive across the globe.

As this school year comes to an end, I want to wish the graduating classes the very best of luck in their future endeavours as they complete this important milestone. Congratulations to the class of 2023.
